Sven MILCENT & the Utopik Design Lab have done it! They’ve taken our entire collected evolution of cup-making and holding of drink history and combined it into one cup. One cup to hold them all. This is “One Glass for Every Drink” and it’s made to work for everyone. It of course tends to the four main glass-specific types of drink: water, cognac, wine, and champagne. It uses the same head and a different base for each of these. Sounds lovely doesn’t it? Let’s have a sip or two and talk about it.

This isn’t the first interchangeable base cup we’ve had here on Yanko, and it wont be the last. It’s a fantastic idea and deserving of a slew of attempts at it in order to make it perfect. Here’s one with some really fabulous ideas, and rather elegant ones if I do say so myself.

And while we’re at it, I’ve got to say that my favorite drink glass in the world must be the snifter – looked after here closely by that cognac glass on it’s side. Very sassy. Very nice. Very on it’s side where it definitely aught to be, havin a great time.

Loving the work of Gary Taxali

Gary Taxali is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in every major magazine and newspaper. Gary has exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout North America and Europe including Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.
In 2005, he launched his first vinyl toy, The Toy Monkey, which included a special edition along with a silkscreen print commissioned by The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. This led Gary to create his own toy company, Chump Toys, which recently saw the release of his OH NO and OH OH vinyl figures.

Aside from his gallery shows and illustration work, Gary also devotes a portion of his time teaching and lecturing at various arts organizations and schools.

He is a Founding Member of IPA (The Illustrators' Partnership of America) and sits on the Advisory Board of 3x3: The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration. Gary has also juried many student and professional competitions including The Society of Illustrators, The National Magazine Awards, The Dallas Society of Visual Communications and 3x3: The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration.

Currently, Gary is writing and illustrating his first children's book entitled This Is Silly, which is being published by Scholastic and slated for a Summer 2010 release.
He lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Over the last year or so Japan had been struck by a number of scandals involving food companies tampering with expiration dates. The new design keeps people honest by changing colors based on the level of ammonia the food emits as it ages. After it has passed its expiration date the barcode is no longer readable, making it impossible to sell.

The beauty of religious Imagery

Shiva, meaning “Auspicious one”, also known as Rudra (the “Feared One”) is a major Hindu god and one aspect of Trimurti. In the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism, Shiva is seen as the Supreme God. In the Smarta tradition, he is one of the five primary forms of God.

Shiva is usually worshipped in the form of Shiva linga. In images, he is generally represented as immersed in deep meditation or dancing the Tandava upon Maya, the demon of ignorance in his manifestation of Nataraja, the lord of the dance.

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage; and the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. Representations of Lakshmi (or Shri) are found also in Jain monuments.

She is believed to protect her devotees from all kinds of misery and money-related sorrows.

Ganesha, also spelled Ganesa or Ganesh and also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, and Pillaiyar, is one of the best-known and most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon.[5] His image is found throughout India.[6] Hindu sects worship him regardless of affiliations.[7] Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists, and beyond India.[8]

Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify.Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles (Vighnesha, Vighneshvara) patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He is honoured at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as Patron of Letters during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography.

The first painted wall sign for The Coca-Cola Company was done in 1894 in Cartersville, GA. The concept quickly took off and the Company began to commission professional wall sign painters around the country. According to an excellent 1988 article in the Coca-Cola Collectors News by Bill Bateman and Randy Schaeffer, by 1910 25 % of the entire advertising budget for Coca-Cola was devoted to wall signs.

In addition to the signs commissioned by the Company, our bottlers wanted to utilize this advertising medium. In order to ensure the standard use of the script logo and colors, the Company began to issue both standards manuals and pounce patterns the bottlers could use for the signs. While the standards books gave basic instructions on paint colors and how to paint the signs, the pounce patterns were essentially connect the dot paper patterns which could be applied to the wall to give the sign painter lines to paint in.

Phil Mooney has been the historian and archivist for The Coca-Cola Company for three decades. Recently, we spoke with Mooney about Coca-Cola collectibles, the artists who created many of Coke’s most famous images, and some of the rarest pieces he’s ever seen. Mooney writes a blog called Coca-Cola Conversations, which is a member of our Hall of Fame.

As the archivist for Coca-Cola, I’m interested in preserving the history of this company. Integrally tied to that history are all of the things that we’ve used to market and promote the products. That’s really how I got exposed to the collecting side of the business: I learned that there are all these people out there who were just collecting Coke stuff, things that we produced to advertise and market the product.

Cheap Printing, Cheap Logo to Match

For most identity designers, companies like LogoWorks, LogoBee or whatever other cute name they acquire, are not to be taken seriously and are only seen as damaging to the industry by lowering (rather ridiculously) prices and quality. For offset and other specialty quality printers, companies like Vistaprint hold a similar position: cheap, fast, mediocre quality. If you have ever printed anything with a quality printer and anything with Vistaprint you know the difference but, let’s face it, most civilians (non-designers) people don’t — which is worth more than $400 million in 2008 revenue for Vistaprint, according to their 10-k. And Graphic Arts Online, lists it as the 40th top printer in North America.

But we are here to talk about their logo, which very much appropriately looks as if it was designed by LogoWorks or one of its ilk. For a public company with such high stakes you would think they might opt for something a little more sophisticated than fountains of CMY(no K) gushing out of their name. The previous logo didn’t set a very high standard but at the very least it didn’t call too much attention to itself, with the thin lines and small type. This one demands that you see it, and it’s not a pretty sight. The typography looks like the bastard child of Tobias Frere-Jones’ Interstate and Avenir, and those have to be the smallest, relatively speaking, tittles (dots over the “i”s) I have seen lately. What’s even sadder is that you could flip the logos and have the old one replace the new one and it wouldn’t make a difference, they are both equally underwhelming.

Elder brother of Walter E. and Roy O. Disney, he along with his brothers founded The Walt Disney Company in 1923.After many heated and sometimes violent discussions,
mostly due to his very peculiar and strange work methods, and especially because
of his children illustrations which can only be described as ‘queer’, he was
fired from his own company and expelled from the core of the Disney family
itself, situation that made him change his very own last name from Disney to
“Majesto” His brothers made sure to wipe each and every piece of work that could
credit his existence, burning all his sketches and his macabre collection of
deformed animals.
Secluded in the darkness and mentally supressed, Axtor decides to give birth to
a new company named “Espeluzland” in order to compete with the overly friendly
and fantastic world of his new enemies, the Disney brothers.

MEET THE WORLD
Icaro Doria is Brazilian, 25 and has been working for the magazine Grande Reportagem, in Lisbon, Portugal, for the last 3 years. He is part of the team (with Luis Silva Dias, João Roque, Andrea Vallenti and João Roque) that produced the flags campaign which has been circulating the Earth in chain letters via e-mail. Icaro gave us a small statement about the campaign, translated by Isabell Erdmann:

The magazine Revista Grande Reportagem is a Hard Journalism magazine, on the same line as the Times. The idea was to bring across the concept that the magazine offers profound journalism about topics of real importance to the world of today.

This is how we thought of the concept Meet the World.

We started to research relevant, global, and current facts and, thus, came up with the idea to put new meanings to the colours of the flags. We used real data taken from the websites of Amnesty International and the UNO.

The campaign has been running in Portugal since January 2005. There are eight flags that portray very current topics like the division of opinions about the war in Iraq in the United States, the violence against women in Africa, the social inequality in Brazil, the drug trafficking in Columbia, Aids and malaria in Angola, etc.

With regards to the email presenting the campaign as being done by a Norwegian diplomat, this information is completely wrong. There is no Norwegian diplomat called Charung Gollar, there was no presentation in the UNO, and the campaign is not called ‘The Power of the Stars’. It happens so rarely these days but every now and then you hear of someone stumbling across a classic piece of furniture that has been discarded or taken to charity, unbeknownst of its true value and selling for tenths of its worth.

In a discovery the design equivalent of Howard Carter’s unearthing of Tutankhamen’s tomb, Richa Mukhia stumbled across a host of original one off pieces of furniture designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret for a specific project they were working on in the early 1950s in India in the city of Chandigarh. After five years of salvaging and careful restoration the collection is now on show in London’s cavernous P3 space.
In post-Raj India Le Corbusier and Jeanneret were commissioned to design a city in the foothills of the Himalayas, putting into bricks and mortar their ideas of modern living. Responsible for the town planning, landscaping and architecture it was an opportunity for them to try out their ideas on an unprecedented scale. Less widely documented but certainly no less significant was the furniture they also designed for the city.

'We obtained the furniture about five years ago after spotting it on a rubbish tip in a very tired state,' explains Mukhia. 'Though the buildings in Chandigarh were still very much in use, the furniture, which was predominantly timber, was nearly 50 years old and showing its age. Hence it was discarded when rufurbishment of the interiors was carried out.'

What a weird 'Wonderland' Burton's made

You might have gone down the rabbit hole before. But never with a guide quite as attuned to the fantastic as Tim Burton.

Those who have grown curiouser and curiouser about what the offbeat reinventor of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory might conjure up in his version of Alice in Wonderland can feast their eyes on this array of concept art and publicity images, due to hang in movie theaters this week to promote the March 5, 2010, release.

"It has been Burton-ized" is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director's vision of the Lewis Carroll classic. Many elements are familiar, from the enigmatic Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) to the fierce Jabberwock (Christopher Lee). But none has been presented in this sort of visually surreal fashion.

"We finished shooting in December after only 40 days," Zanuck says. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember.

Among those who welcome her back is the Mad Hatter, a part tailor-made for Johnny Depp as he collaborates with Burton for the seventh time. "This character is off his rocker," Zanuck says.

Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska, 19, best known for HBO's In Treatment, has the coveted title role. "There is something real, honest and sincere about her," Zanuck says. "She's not a typical Hollywood starlet."

There is the usual Burton-esque ghoulishness (Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen, whose favorite retort is "Off with their heads," has a moat filled with bobbing noggins), but Zanuck assures most kids can handle it. "The book itself is pretty dark," he notes. "This is for little people and people who read it when they were little 50 years ago."

Banksy in secret exhibition

Whatever you think of Banksy, his art and his stunts, what he's done here is pretty extraordinary.

Normally this grand building is home to artefacts and paintings remembering Bristol's maritime history, but today the Edwardian halls are filled with Banksy's unique blend of anger and humour. All this - and hardly anybody knew about it.

Exactly WHO Banksy is remains shrouded in mystery - we do know he grew up in Bristol, and this free exhibition is said to be his way of thanking and rewarding the city.

Many people are proud of him - he's become one of Bristol's most famous (and notorious) sons - others are bound to question whether a guy who spent his youth spray-painting walls deserves to be given this platform.

Either way, you've got to hand it to him - he's done it again!

Pedro's back and Madrid has gone wild. With the release of his 17th feature film, "Los Abrazos Rotos" (Broken Embraces) Almodovár tells the tale of a blind film director (Lluis Omar) and how he came to lose not only his sight, but also the love of his life (Penelope Cruz). The film is by no means a departure from the Spaniard's typical traits, with the picture employing the usual Almodóvar fodder – love, lies, tears, melodrama, comedy - to great effect. The film journeys between the past and the present, and interweaves diverse stories and viewpoints, to construct a fascinating drama full of twists and turns. The acting is terrific and there are many 'in-jokes' involving subtle references to previous Almodóvar films, with the picture rounded off nicely by a soundtrack produced by the ever-brilliant Alberto Iglesias (featuring original music alongside tracks by Uffie, Cat Power and Can).

My only gripe would be the film's length, clocking up over 2 hours – a factor which is noticeable given that the film's storyline does seem to run out of steam after the 90-minute mark. But that minor complaint should not detract from the fact that Almodóvar has demonstrated himself to be one of the most individual and consistent film-makers in modern cinema. It must be said that 'Los Abrazos Rotos' is not the tour-de-force that some fans may have hoped for and falls short of eclipsing what in my opinion was his career high – Hable Con Ella (Talk to Her). Nevertheless, Almodóvar delivers a very engaging film which is sure to become another hit, and will no doubt earn more accolades for the man who can deservedly call himself Spain's most successful film-maker of all time.

Nick Cave Soundsuits Collaboration

YBCA presents the largest scale presentation of work by Chicago-based artist, Nick Cave, featuring forty of his "Soundsuits"—multi-layered mixed-media, wearable sculptures named for the sounds made when the sculptures are worn. As reminiscent of African and religious ceremonial costumes as they are of haute couture, Cave's work explores issues of ceremony, ritual, myth and identity. He does this through a layering of concepts, highly-skilled techniques and varied traditions, using materials such as fabrics, beads, sequins, old bottle caps, rusted iron, sticks, twigs, leaves and hair. Mad, humorous, elaborate, grotesque, glamorous and unexpected, the Soundsuits are created from scavenged ordinary materials—detritus from both nature and culture—that Cave re-contextualizes into visionary masterpieces.

Trend-watching, until recently, has largely been an exercise in watching connections form between direct associations. Photoshop releases a new filter, and voila - entire raft of logos take on that effect. A particular illustration style is featured in a successful advertising campaign or movie, and in what seems like minutes, the flavor of that art starts to enhance corporate identities.

Periodically, something truly surprising and unexpected pops up. Finding those little treasures are one of the great perks of categorizing 27,000 logos, as LogoLounge and a talented panel of judges just did in preparation for our fourth book. But there's always that natural undercurrent of influence that touches this design and that, a drift of scent, a faint change in air temperature. It's there, but almost not.

This year, however, it seems as though there has been a change in the nature of trends themselves. Instead of a hub-to-spoke relationship in which trends fan out from a central source, prevailing tendencies in logo design now seem to send out long underground runners that poke through the dirt in unrelated, unexpected places, anywhere in the world. It's harder and harder to trace the rhizomatous spread of ideas anymore - which truly is a good thing.

Stock art website with stolen art suing original artist

In the last couple of days, there has been a firestorm of attention to a situation happening to a fellow logo designer and colleague, Jon Engle. It seems a stock illustration firm and website, Stockart.com has accused Jon of copyright infringement and is seeking a rather hefty sum of $18,000.00 in damages for what they say, is stolen artwork. The work in question is approximately 65 pieces of work that were posted to the logo design site, Logopond.com.

These are pieces that Jon has original sketches, working files and has posted under his real name, not some indecipherable handle that one can easily hide behind. While the person who supplied stockart.com the copied logos is nowhere to be seen online, no portfolio, no postings of the logos in any way. His only venue for selling his work and skills is a unpopular outdated website that requires registration to view images.

On top of all of this Stockart.com's lawyer is calling all Jon's clients and telling them he is a thief and is using stolen artwork in his work. They are attacking his livelihood and defaming his character. Stockart.com is attacking the very market (artists, designers) that it services and depends on for artwork. I can't see how any artist or designer would ever do business with this company after this fiasco.

It's also become apparent that Stockart.com is combing the internet to find other 'perpetrators' out there. They are currently offering a 10% bounty for anyone that turns in a designer or firm using their artwork illegally. I can understand that issue, as it tears at the meager profits that designers in our industry are making, but this situation is a witch hunt and unfortunately, everyone involved will be deeply affected.

In the wake of the head-spinning greedy totals you hear about in the media with our crumbling economy, $18,000 doesn't sound like much. But, to a small business owner, this can be a costly and devastating blow to both your business and your reputation. I would encourage you to make a contribution to Jon's legal fund, should you be so inclined.

Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara at play with paper dolls, and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them adult roles. At the time, most children's toy dolls were representations of infants. Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea of an adult-bodied doll to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel's directors.

During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across German toy doll called Bild Lilli.[1] The adult-figured Lilli doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Die Bild-Zeitung. Lilli was a working girl who knew what she wanted and was not above using men to get it. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955, and although it was initially sold to adults, it became popular with children who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that were available separately.

6 Warning Signs of a Problem Client

Have you ever had a project that turned out to cause way more stress that it was worth? Of course you have. We all have. Most of the time you’re left saying “Why didn’t I see this coming?”

Here are some early warning signs of a problem project and some tips for upgrading them from hopeless to profitable.

1. “I tried doing it myself, but…”

This is a sign of the frustrated artist. They fancy themselves creative, and have given it their best shot, but found that their skills fell short. Now they are turning to you, the consummate professional, to pick up the pieces.

Whether they are willing to tell you or not, this client has a vision in their head of what they want, and are unlikely to be satisfied with anything else. You may have trouble hiding your opinions on their bad ideas, and you probably won’t feel any pride in the finished product because you had no control.

The Solution: Some may avoid these clients all together, but there is a chance to really shine here. If you keep them happy they will gladly talk you up to everyone they know because you succeeded where they could not. If you choose to take on this project, get them to be completely explicit about what they want. Some clients in this situation are reluctant to tell you their ideas, so you may have to really coax it out of them. It is worth the effort though, because the alternative is a long process of trial and error until you stumble upon what they wanted all along.

2. There’s No Real Deadline

At first glance, a project with a loose deadline can seem great and stress-free. Be wary, though, because this is often a sign that the client lacks real commitment to the project and a client that won’t return your phone calls or reply to your emails is actually worse than one that is constantly breathing down your neck. In some cases, it can lead to the client giving up on the project all together (and possibly even stiffing you on the bill).

If the client is committed to the project but not worried about the deadline it’s OK though, right? Well, not necessarily. A loose deadline means they can change their mind freely without too much concern. This can lead to an end endless loop of revisions putting you way over budget and editing your work into oblivion.

The Solution: If the client isn’t committed to the project, then step lightly. In some cases it may be best to turn this job down. If they are committed, but the timeline is loose then make them set a specific deadline. Do it nicely, but be firm on it. It’s for their own good.

3. “Somebody Told Me I Should…”

Be wary of this phrase, as in “My friend told me I should have a designer do a branding package.” This may seem harmless, and often it is, but it can also be a sign that they don’t really know what they are asking you to do, and may not actually want it. This can lead to disinterest in the project on their behalf (see above about the client that won’t respond), or half-way through the branding process you may discover that they really just wanted you to choose a fancy font for their name. If they are using industry lingo, don’t presume they are using it correctly.

The Solution: The answer here is plenty of client education and probing questions. Lay out in detail exactly what you are going to be doing for them, the process you will take to do it, and what they need to do to make it happen. Then, get as much info out of them as possible about what they are looking for. If you can lead them successfully through the project, you can build a lifelong client who will give you plenty of creative freedom.

4. Multiple Points Of Contact

This problem is common with big corporate clients and government contracts. There are many stakeholders in the project and they all have direct access to give you feedback. Often the multiple stakeholders will not talk to each other, leaving you in the middle of a political minefield and getting conflicting information. They may have a big budget for your project, but they will use it up by ongoing revisions and going back on previous decisions.

The Solution: Make them appoint a gatekeeper who will be the only one allowed to contact you. This can be hard to ask for, but it is worth it. Be confident and direct and couch the request in a tone of experience. With a little luck, a well placed “In my experience with this kind of project, the best approach is…” will do the trick. Let them argue about revisions before they contact you.

5. “Trust Me, This Is Going To Be Huge!”

This can often be a sign that the client hasn’t realistically looked at the obstacles in their way. Clients with this mentality often budget with money they don’t have, relying on future revenue to pay your bill. This can lead to you not getting paid, or in some cases, them blaming you if the project fails. This client is likely to ask for discounts up front, dangling a carrot of big budgets down the road in front of you.

The Solution: This type of client can be convincing and may exaggerate their previous successes to get you on their side. Don’t be sucked in. Be firm with your budget and your billing schedule, and make sure you get a solid deposit from them. The good news is that these clients are often willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, giving you plenty of work.

6. Repeated Meeting Cancellations

This is sign that the project is low on their priority list, and that they possibly aren’t completely committed to it. You can expect that this will be a recurring theme in your relationship with them and that the project may drag on because of it. In some cases you may get the same treatment when it is time for them to pay.

The Solution: Be timely when delivering your work and follow up promptly if they don’t respond. It’s better to let the project age on their desk than yours. Because the project is low priority for them, you need to keep them on track and hold them accountable for their end of the deal. A well-tracked timeline can do wonders here.
Conclusion

We’re always going to have the occasional problem project. The important thing is not to let them get you down. Remember why you’re freelancing in the first place and chalk them up as experience. When a project goes awry, make note of what happened and how you could have handled it better, or avoided the problem all together. Keep a careful eye out for the red flag warnings and things will go much smoother.
